First Post
So, here's my first post....
I haven't felt compelled to start a blog until now. I developed my first "real" website in my online journalism class, and now I've been bitten by the bug. I'm going to turn everything I do into a website!! haha! Wait, forget it. I have too much to do.
For example. I have 3 midterms tomorrow. Man that pisses me off! I love it when they're spaced out. The exams, not the teachers. Although, some classes are more fun with a spaced out teacher.
I had a debate with my online teacher today about my website. He likes it, except for the fact that I designed it for 1024 x 768. He wanted it at 800 x 600. Who the hell uses that anymore? Hell, I'm always at 1280 x 1024. I guess my eyes are still good. :) So anyway, I complied, and adjusted everything to 800 x 600. Now, it sucks. I mean, it wasn't the greatest before, now it's worse. So, I posted the original site on my website at http://www.thejournalist.ca. The quick link to the site in question is http://www.thejournalist.ca/selfreliance/index.htm. I tried something a little different with mine and it's optimized for 1024 x 768. For some reason, the background tiles on me at higher resolutions, which is fine because I must be the only one out there surfing that resolution.
Anyway. I didn't have enough time to figure it out this weekend, but I will. If I have time I'm going to do my next instalment in Flash. That should be better. And if not, I'll just refine what I've got.
I learned another thing about journalism today. If you have a story idea, make sure you let the teacher know ASAP so you don't get your idea scooped. That happened to me today, and I know damn well I'd write a better story. Lesson learned. Yes, this year has been full of lessons outside of class. Oh, I don't forget them either. I remember them all.
So, I am going to have to get back to studying soon. I have to admit, after working at a newspaper this summer, I've had a hard time getting back into school mode. I was happy when I covered the press conference to rename UCC to Thompson Rivers University. I interviewed the MLA for the Williams Lake area, Walt Cobb, and also the premier. It was much more fun than sitting in class. And, I got another clip. After this summer I have plenty to choose from though.
I am going to be happy when school is done. Next semester might be a little different for me. I applied to go on an exchange to England. I'd be at the University of Salford just outside Manchester. I'd go from February through June. It would be a great experience. If I do go, I will blog the whole experience and include all the photos. :) It would be interesting! Then, I'll see if I can land a job/internship at one of the papers there. I understand that the Manchester Guardian is supposed to be a good paper. We shall see.
I'm going to see if I can keep typing and avoid studying. I really shouldn't though. I think I'll do fine on them. I just resent having 3 of them in one damn day. The worst is marketing. I find that now ALL I want to do are journalism courses. Having been an accountant before, when I was in school, I liked all the business courses. Now, forget it! haha!
At least my accounting and business skills will come in handy if I decide to go into Public Relations. Oh, did I mention that I'm doing the PR major? Yes, the dark side, and no, it's not selling out. I'll be the PR guy for the La Leche League or something. No Manny, it's not a hockey league. :P Find out here: http://www.lalecheleague.org/
I would love to be the reporter on the story if the La Leche League folded or whatever non-profits do. "La Leche League goes tits up!" would be my headline. Ahh, if only!
And another thing. If you're in the La Leche League are you a pro or an amateur? Not me of course, but since Manon Rheaume played in the NHL, briefly, why can't I? :) Yeah right.
So there you have it. My first post. Wish me luck on my exams.
